Bitter Sweet Day

Today was really hard. We got a call from home that our puppy was very ill and needed to be put down. Elmo was 12 years old and really our first baby. He was well loved and had a good life but we are still soooo sooo sad!

Our flight from Xi'an to Guangzhou was delayed because of pea soup fog. We finally got on about 12:30 (our original flight was at 10:00). Scarlett was really fussy in the airport (I walked about 10 miles with her until I thought my arms were going to fall off) and we were really dreading the flight, but she was such a trooper. She looked out the window with Grandma Janie for a while and then fussed a bit (less than 5 minutes) then slept till we pulled up at the gate. How amazing is that! She also drank a bunch of formula today so I was really thankful for that. I have been worried that we weren't getting enough liquids in her. She has been having wet and poopy diapers every day but didn't seem to be eating much, except gerber fruit puffs.
Once we arrived at the White Swan hotel (which is the MOST beautiful hotel I have ever seen, I'll post photos tomorrow). We unpacked, I took a long shower, we rested some and then want to Lucy's Cafe (that has American food). I had ice tea with ice, a hamburger and fries and a strawberry milkshake. You have NO idea how fabulous it all was, the milkshake alone made me feel a million times better--we haven't had milk since we left, all the hotels so far have had canned milk). AND the best thing was that Scarlett ate about a 1/2 of cup of chicken congee (rice porrage) along with her 7 oz of formula. She was looking very fat and happy!!
We were really proud of her and Daddy too (he got those first bites of congee in her). After dinner we found a little shop that loans strollers so we checked one out for the week (our backs are so happy!). So after a really long and frustrating day we had a nice evening. It is very warm here (80F) and feels like Hawaii, we ate outside and it was really lovely. Plus we met up with all of our CCAI friends we toured with in Beijing. Seeing everyone with their children is a delight. We are going on a short tour with everyone tomorrow and really looking forward to that!

Oh we are also looking for Gerber Fruit Puffs in Guangzhou, so if ANYONE knows of some place that we can get some we would be so grateful. We don't have enough to make it home.

We miss you all and can't wait to get home and have lots of hugs.
P.S. Ava we miss you sooooo much! I hope you are saving up a bunch of hugs for me because I really need them!
Love ya!

Oh Maryanne, I'm so so sorry to hear about Elmo. How truly sad. Maybe he knew you were in good hands, and it was his time to go. But, neverthless, it still doesn't make it easy to accept. You know how I feel about our furry ones.

It sounds as though you like the transition from Xi'an to Guangzhou. Holy cow, did you say 80 degrees. That's really warm. I spoke to my niece who lives in Seattle, and she said it's getting really cold there. Your little one is going to have to be bundled up with cute litte coats when she arrives.

I'm glad you are almost at the end of your trip, and you get to come home. Keep me posted, and again, I'm sorry to hear about Elmo..xoxo
